How Does Helium Work?

I’m doing a summer project for school, and one of the question is: “What are a few gases used for floating or flying? How do they work?” I know that helium is one of those gases, but can somebody give me a short explanation on how helium keeps things aloft? (Like hot air balloons, etc.) Thanks!

If you are in a swimming pool and try to push a plastic ball under the water it tries to come back up. This is because the ball is lighter per volume of space compared to the same volume of water it is displacing.

Same thing with helium or hot air balloons. The helium balloon is lighter than the air around it so the air tries to push it out of the “pool water” just like the example above.

Same thing with the hot air balloon, the hot air is lighter per volume than regular air so the regular air tries to spit out the hot air to the top side of the air (higher elevations) to reach equilibrium. When the hot air in the balloon equals the weight of the outside air per volume, the ballon is in equilibrium and won’t rise any higher

Road rage on the bumpy road of life! Stress on America’s highways is at an all-time high! And, because of this, you may be suffering from one of these little-known conditions: PMS – Post Motoring Syndrome; PTSD – Post Traumatic Street Disorder; SAD – Seasonal Asphalt Disorder; RSD – Reflex Street Dystrophy (common in older drivers).

Orange barrel humor! What’s that? It all started at the International Hot-air Balloon Fiesta, located in Albuquerque, New Mexico (USA) where I live. Billed as the most photographed event in the world, over 700 hot-air balloonists participate each year from all over the world. (See: Feast for the Eyes)

Me and a friend visited the Balloon Fiesta sometime in the mid-1990′s, and I mentioned to her that one of these days, there’s going to be an orange barrel hot-air balloon up in the skies, drifting over the horizon. Well…it didn’t happen anytime soon, but in the 2006 Fiesta…there it was…with all the other Special Shapes…an orange barrel balloon, calmly drifting over the city…as I predicted!

For several months after the Balloon Fiesta, I began to get these images coming into my head, and it all had to do with some sort of orange barrel humor, and many of them were quite funny! Why were these images coming into my head? What would I do with them, anyway?

I decided to start taking notes, on what these images looked like and I started to sketch some of these crude drawings, etc. The headlines, captions and clip-art that would go into creating these orange barrel scenes on paper. Orange barrel humor? This is crazy! But, since I deal in craziness…I proceeded to see where all this would take me!

I continued taking informal notes and crude drawings for a couple of months, as ideas came to me, and then one day! BINGO…ATTENTION-GETTERS! That’s it! I could use these orange barrel scenes in my marketing program. About this time, I had about 60 ideas for scenes, which would be laid out on standard 8 1/2 X 11 bright orange paper, but I chose to do only about a dozen scenes for now. I also had done about seven scenes and placed them into a montage on two-sided page to have more samples!

I’ve done Orange Barrel Humor since 1996, and in the year 2008, I still mail out my little “attention-getters” locally and nationally, and I have a lot of fun doing so! This is the ultimate in silliness…and I love it! The only difference in 2008, is the fact that I have decided to build a display show for the public, and the show would be FREE to charitable and non-profit organizations, etc.

The display show would consist of about three table displays, and all the traffic colors would be used…yellow, black, white and of course…orange! All the orange barrel scenes would be framed for show, and there would be many street signs; anecdotes, poems and general nonsense at the show!

So, if you ever get a bright orange envelope in the mail…and inside the envelope are a couple of bright orange sheets describing the show…you’ll know where it came from! Don’t forget…next time you see one of those pesky orange barrels out on the streets…think of me, won’t you?

Hot Air Balloon Racing

Hot Air Balloon Racing

As we look back at mankind’s attempts to create the perfect Vertical Take Off and Landing aircraft, we see almost an unlimited number of radical concepts, designs and departures from the typical aircraft models we are use to. It has been a goal of aerospace engineers through the ages to develop the ideal compromise design which can go from vertical take off with a heavy load and then proceed to forward high rates of speed and/or performance.

Many of these designs go back prior to World War II. During World War II in Germany and the United States and after the war in he US, several hundreds of designs were looked at and at least 100 legitimate attempts. Some were X-planes, some were helicopter hybrids and others were like nothing you have ever seen before; are you sure that thing will fly? Then innovators, scientists and even the fringe began to dream of flying cars and to this day the race is on to produce one which is cheap enough to build and safe enough for your family.

Recently as material sciences hyperspace the past period technological advances we see hope that we will be able to build VTOL aircraft using some of these new materials, which are 10 times as strong and a fifth of the weight. For instance consider Nano Tube Sheets, which will be 50 times stronger than steel and an unbelievable savings in weight. Even with the newest composites some of which are one-third the weight of aluminum and three times the strength, there is great potential.

I propose that we take all the archives of designs previous tried or for which we have plans for and spend 2 Billion Dollars in building one-third and one-fight scaled models using the latest advanced materials of each and every one of these concepts. I propose this money be spent in Universities where aerospace design is taught and that prizes be given out for those who can produce and fly models from the long list of past period designs or those who come up with entirely new concepts.

Although this may seem like a lot of money, I believe it will accomplish many things. First it will help the military in the future of their Unmanned Aerial Vehicle roadmap planning. Second it will help the Air Force Research Lab in keeping us bleeding edge. Third I feel NASA can use this knowledge to develop better robotic assistants for exploration and space colony uses, not mention Earth Sciences. Forth it will usher in a new level of robotics for those High School students now graduating who are moving into the field of robotics due to the push for contests at that level. Fifth if will help DARPA, DHS and FEMA with their efforts to keep us ahead of the pack, protect our security and help us deal with Mother Nature.

Any smart businessperson will tell you that the money you spend in Research and Development is money in the bank for the future. And since so much has already been done in the past and so many designs, which might have failed but did not have the use of proper power plants or modern materials, we need to be looking both forward and backwards and delete the barrier of time. Think on this.
