Hot Air Baloon Rides

The idea of flying has sparked the imagination of mankind for centuries or even millennia. The first man-made flying objects were not airplanes but kites; records of kite flying date back as early to 200 B.C. in China, and rudimentary hot air balloons were first designed about the same time. Leonardo da Vinci famously designed several aircraft in the fifteenth century, but never tried to construct or fly them.

All of the aircraft that were shown to work up to the eighteenth and mid nineteenth centuries were lighter than air, a significant difference from the heavier-than-air aircraft that would be developed in the twentieth century. Important mechanisms that would later be used for propelling and controlling aircraft were developed during this period, even if the overall designs themselves were flawed and unsuccessful.

By the close of the nineteenth century, the idea of flying had captured the attention of the world, and multiple aviation pioneers built various aircraft that managed to become airborne, if even just for a second or two, predating the Wright Brothers’ famous flight by up to 30 years. Multiple pioneers were working on both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft concurrently, using hundreds of imaginative designs with varying degrees of success. Gustave Whitehead, for example, reportedly flew his engine-powered, heavier-than-air design for a distance of 800 meters at 15 meters height as early as 1901 or 1902, preceding the Wright Brothers’ famous flight at Kitty Hawk by more than two years. Other inventors also claimed to have achieved flight between 1900 and 1910. By the early twentieth century, advancements both in engine technology and the understanding of aerodynamics made powered, controllable flight possible.

The Wright Brothers began working with gliders and other unpowered flight methods around the turn of the century, and are widely recognized to have the first sustained, controlled, and powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft flown by a pilot, accomplishing this feat near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. By 1905, their airplane designs could be flown for upwards of 40 minutes or 30 miles in a single flight. The development of aircraft grew exponentially as a response to World War I, during which time aircraft were used for military flights, including both reconnaissance flights and the world’s first fighter planes.

Development of the jet engine began in the 1930s, mainly in Germany and in England. Both countries would have working jet aircraft by the end of World War II. After the war, the aircraft industry turned towards the civilian market, considered the dawn of what would be known as the jet age. The first commercial jet airliners were put into service by the end of the 1940s. Regular jet service was available by the mid 1950s, ushering in the age of mass commercial air travel.

By the start of the 1960s, aircraft were no longer restricted to flights beginning and ending on land, as the first space flights became possible and the space race began. Russia’s Sputnik 1, launched in 1957, started a new era of flight, culminating in the first manned moon landing in 1969.

The “G. Leon Breitling” firm was founded in Saint-Imia, Switzerland in 1884 by Leon Breitling. He opened a workshop specializing in making chronographs and precision counters for scientific and industrial purposes. Since the first Breitling Replica Watch was manufactured over a hundred years ago, the legacy and tradition of quality timepieces has continued on.

In 1915 Breitling developed their first wristwatch chronograph and went on to make several significant developments in this area. In 1923 they were the first watch manufacturer to introduce an independent push piece for the chronograph, enabling the start and return-to-zero function (previously performed by the winding-crown). Then in1934 Breitling added a second push piece to the chronograph enabling either cumulative or incremental time recording. These developments made the Breitling watch a favorite amongst pilots.

In 1936 Breitling was chosen to supply the Royal Air Force with time keeping equipment. In the 40′s Breitling became the US Air Force official pilots watch whilst also supplying the American armed forces. By the 50′s Breitling had cemented their position in the aviation industry and was supplying cockpit clocks for most of the international airlines.

Over the years, Breitling launched a number of classic watches. 1942 saw the launch of the Chronomat, the first chronograph to be fitted with a circular slide rule. In 1952, the Replica Breitling Navitimer Watch was launched, a wrist watch equipped with a so called “navigation computer” that allowed pilots to calculate flight plans. This watch became an instant favorite amongst pilots. In 1962, the Cosmonaut was released providing a 24 hour chronograph. This watch was worn by Scott Carpenter when he flew America’s second ever manned orbital flight in the Aurora 7. In 1969, Breitling was part of a consortium of watch manufacturers that developed the first automatic chronograph, a major break through at the time.

1979 saw the end of an era for Breitling, with the death of Will Breitling. The company was subsequently bought by Ernest Schneider launching a new era for Breitling. Schneider introduced watch lines for other professions such as yachting and diving, whilst continuing to focus on building high quality, high precision watches for the aviation industry. A number of now classic watches were introduced under Schneider’s leadership such as the new Chronomat (1984), the Aerospace (1985), the Emergency (1995) and the B-1 (1998).

Today, Breitling continues its involvement in aviation and all the adventures that it entails. The “Breitling World Cup of Aerobatics” was introduced in 1993 and is recognized by the Federation Aeronatique International as having the same status as a world championship. Breitling also had enormous success with the Breitling Orbiter 3, the first balloon to fly around the world. In the year 2000, Breitling inaugurated its new headquarters in Grenchen.

Air Ballooning
How long can a hot air balloon or thermal airship stay airborne?

I was considering what I would use to try and escape/evade zombies during an infection (as you do) and thought a hot air balloon as an option. Could it go for just a number of hours, a day or more possibly?

A typical hot air balloon can stay aloft between 45 minutes to 2 hours. It depends on the size of balloon, how much weight is carried, the amount of propane on board and the ambient temperature. When its cold out (below freezing), some balloonists make a sport of seeing how long they can go. 5 hours is not uncommon.

As far a escaping infection. A flu shot is a lot cheaper.

Mini Hot Air Balloon Kit

Mini Hot Air Balloon Kit
how do you make a mini hot air balloon?

i have a project and i need to make a hot air balloon, we have to to a presentation in front of the class so i dont want it to be really big.i can also buy a kit and make one from that so if you have any ideas plz help me!!

My daughter made one years ago. She used a balloon blown up. a 2 inch curtain ring at the top, wedges of fabric dipped in diluted white glue draped from the curtain ring down the balloon. Then she used string from the bottom points of the fabric to a basket. When it was dry, she punctured the balloon.

The size of the balloon determines the finished size of your hot air balloon.
