History of the Hot Air Balloon

A ride in a hot air balloon can be an exhilarating and refreshing way of bringing new perspective to your life. However, the idea of being suspended in the air by a thin-looking skein and wicker basket is admittedly peculiar. Have you ever thought about the history behind this odd, graceful looking contraption?

The hot air balloon was the first flight technology capable of carrying passengers. Unmanned balloons have been used in China since 220 AD as military signals. The first recorded flight was undertaken by a Portuguese priest, Bartolomeu de Gusmão in 1709, who was lifted about four meters off the ground by a small balloon. While calling this a flight may technically be a stretch, it was an impressive feat for its time.

It wasn’t until 1783 Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d’Arlandes took the first flight above Paris, France, launching from the Champs de Mars and landing approximately 21 km away. The French peasants were so frightened by the spectacle of the balloon that they rushed to attack it with knives and pitchforks. They were allegedly pacified when the pilots gave them a bottle of champagne.

Ballooning quickly took off as a competitive sport among fans attempting to set distant and height records. In 1785, Jean Pierre Blanchard and John Jefferies flew a balloon across the English Channel, establishing it as a safe vehicle for long distance travel.  On January 7, 1793, Blanchard became the first person to operate hot balloon rides in America.

Since that time, the popularity of hot air ballooning has literally soared. Besides recreation, balloons have been used in military and commercial applications. Today, a number of festivals are dedicated to ballooners, such as the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta and the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. Spectators merely have to look out of their windows to enjoy these colorful pieces of floating history.

Balloons Make The World Go Round

By Peter Airdee

The world is a brighter, lighter, happier place thanks to balloons. A bunch of these bobbing decorations are guaranteed to be seen at everything from Bar Mitzvahs to birthday celebrations and have become the essential party item since the Aztecs first created them from cat’s bowels. What else can be used to brighten up the dullest of spaces than a collection of perky, party friendly balloons! They’re relatively cheap, they come in all different shapes, sizes and colours, and if you give one to a young child you’re bound to get a gappy grin in return.

Balloons weren’t always designed for fun and amusement in the early days though. The Aztecs’ earliest balloon prototypes were carefully scoured, turned inside out, sewn with an airtight seal made from vegetable thread and used as sacrifices to the gods. This ingenious invention was also seen in a series of cave engravings found inside the ancient pyramid of Mikerinos. It would seem that balloons have been bouncing around for ages.

The popularity of balloons continued to develop over the centuries until just prior to the first world war when scientists discovered that these streamlined spectacles could be used to calculate ascension formulas for flying planes. Around this time hydrogen was the popular gas of choice due to its unrivalled lifting power, however in the 1920s, when the balloon began to be used for advertising purposes, hydrogen was replaced by helium due to its safer properties.

Synonymous with fun, festivities and merriment, the helium balloon soon became a must have item on parade floats and eye-catching window displays throughout the world. When Helen Warny released 50,000 helium-filled balloons decorated with her name in New York, she unwittingly started a balloon printing trend which would be copied across the globe. Helium balloons have remained popular accessories ever since, providing a burst of colourful decoration and resulting in high voiced shenanigans on many a drunken night. You know who you are!

Today’s market is brimming with printed balloons designed to make a special occasion extra special. Getting married? Get the bride and groom’s name etched in gold. Just had a baby? A cute little teddy bear balloon will look great in the nursery. Balloon printing has become extremely fashionable in the last few years thanks to advanced balloon printing techniques and sturdier materials. With such charming designs to choose from, catchy logos and increased longevity, the market for printing balloons is positively booming. Go to a party, fair, circus, sale, trade show or any other event that offers a relief from the monotonous grind of work and routine and you’ll bump into a balloon.

Balloons have also become a main stream marketing vehicle with big brands using balloons to promote their products. They create colourful eye catching marketing material that incentivises people to identify with their brand and make a purchase. Balloon releases have become a single favourite in this area with many companies doing a balloon release to promote their brand.

So next time you bump into everyone’s favourite lightweight companion, remember they won’t let you down until they pop!

Hot Air Balloon Ride In Maine – A Great Vacation And Travel Destination

By Robert Benjamin

There are all kinds of vacation activities in Maine, but one of the best and most unique is taking a hot air balloon ride for an aerial tour of the area. The best place to take a hot air balloon ride is in Kennebunkport, Maine. Everything beautiful about New England is so obvious floating among the clouds. If you are afraid of heights then a hot air balloon ride is not for you, but if you don’t mind heights then you will be overcome with the beauty you see from the basket.

There are several hot air balloon providers that can take you up, but before you book you should talk to past customers or read some reviews. The reason why is that taking a hot air balloon over Maine is such an amazing experience that you don’t want to risk running into any problems. So, if you read reviews about the different operators you will have a better chance of finding the best operator for you.

Remember that a full afternoon before sunset or else a couple hours at sunrise should be allotted for your balloon ride because there is no exact time for the tour. Balloons go as fast as the wind takes them, or as slow, so you should just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Know, too, that most balloons carry enough fuel to last for a couple of hours. There are several factors like weather, weight, and more that affect the length of the ride. Most balloon rides occur between 500 and 1000 feet off the ground, but sometimes hot air balloons will go even higher!

Most hot air balloon operators in Maine operate seven days per week, that is depending on the weather. Early reservations are important to make sure you have the day and time you want and weekend flights are the busiest. Weekday flights will give you more flexibility and you may be able to show up last minute and still fly. Remember that it is colder in the balloon than on the ground and a light jacket or sweater should be taken. Several people may go up in the hot air balloon, but generally the limit is four. You will want to talk with the tour operator to find out rates, schedules, and the like.

Hot air ballooning in Maine is gorgeous and if you go during September and October when the leaves are changing you will have a breathtaking experience like no other. Give hot air balloon rides a chance and you will likely fall in love!
