do i need a flying licence to fly an hot air balloon?

someone gave me an hot air ballon with all equipment,

ime gonna take her up

Yes, you do. In the United States, you need at least a private pilot certificate with a Lighter-Than-Air category and Balloon class rating. I’m not positive what the procedure is for other countries, but the CAA/JAA requirements are similar in Europe. The exact requirements for training depends on your country.

i cant figure out how they got this physics question answer?

In the dangerous “sport” of bungee-jumping, a daring student jumps from a hot-air balloon with a specially designed elastic cord attached to his waist, as shown in the figure below. The unstretched length of the cord is 26.0 m, the student weighs 725 N, and the balloon is 36.0 m above the surface of a river below. Calculate the required force constant of the cord if the student is to stop safely 5.00 m above the river.

it says the answer is 1800 N/m but i can figure out how they got that answer can someone show me how they got this answer?
im not in calc based physics so please dont leave a complicated answer

The cord is L = 26 m long and the drop height for the daredevil is H = 36 m. To have that S = 5 m safety clearance, the cord can stretch dY = 5 m and no farther. That means PE = 1/2 kdY^2 where dY = 5 m is the maximum potential energy the cord can store when stretched.

Solve for k = 2PE/dY^2, we need to know PE. Here’s the cool part.

PE = the total energy of the jumper when at H – his potential energy when at S = 5 m = W(H – S) = 725*31 Joules This results because the difference between the two PEs represents the energy that the cord must store and neutralize to drive the kinetic energy KE of the fall to zero.

In math talk KE = delPE = W(H – S) = 1/2 kdY^2; where W = 725 N, H = 36 m, S = 5 m, and dY = 5 m.

Then k = 2W(H – S)/dY^2 = 2*725*31/25 = 1798 N/m QED.

Hot Air Balloon Inventors
Famous Quote? (Ten Points!)?

I need to find a quote that has to deal with the invention of the hot air balloon.
Possibly by the Montgolfier brothers or another inventor.

Ten points to any quote that has to do with the hot air balloon’s invention!

How posterity will laugh at us, one way or other! If half a dozen break their necks, and balloonism is exploded, we shall be called fools for having imagined it could be brought to use: if it should be turned to account, we shall be ridiculed for having doubted.

— Horace Walpole, letter to Horace Mann, 24 June 1785.

Previous to this time I had never even a balloon except from a distance. Being interested in their construction, I was about to institute a thorough examination of all its parts, when the aeronaut announced that all was ready. He inquired whether I desired to go up alone, or he should accompany me. My desire, if frankly expressed, would have been not to go up at all; but if I was to go, company was certainly desirable. With an attempt at indifference, I intimated that he might go along.

— George Armstrong Custer, while a Captain in the cavalry. Regards order to go aloft in one of Thaddeus Lowe’s balloons to observe the movements of the Confederate forces. Quoted in ‘Son of the Morning Star.’ 1862.

history =

The first clearly recorded instance of a balloon carrying passengers used hot air to generate buoyancy and was built by the Montgolfier Brothers. After experimenting with with animals, the first tethered balloon flight with humans on board took place on October 19, 1783.

The first free flight with human passengers was on November 21, 1783. King Louis XVI had originally decreed that condemned criminals would be the first pilots, but de Rozier, along with Marquis Francois d’Arlandes, successfully petitioned for the honor.

The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology. On November 21, 1783, in Paris, France – the first manned flight was made by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d’Arlandes in a hot air balloon created by the Montgolfier Brothers.

Hot Air Baloon

The Grand Canyon, located in Arizona, is one of the most visited tourist spots in all of America, and the entire world. This immense gorge, carved out of steep rock and nearly fully encompassed by the Grand Canyon National Park, is a full 277 miles in length. It ranges from 4 to 18 miles wide, and has a depth of 6,000 feet (over one mile). The force of the Colorado River created it over the span of 6 million years.

With such amazing beauty at our fingertips, why would we choose to simply stand at a scenic overlook, grasping the rails in our hands? Why not take one of the spectacular Grand Canyon Balloon Tours.

This area has far too much to offer by simply hiking or stopping and taking pictures. What better way to view the immensity and history the Grand Canyon offers than in a hot air balloon. Even more spectacular than a helicopter tour, balloon tours are peaceful, quiet, and the best feature is simply being outside with the elements, feeling the heat of the Grand Canyon sun on your face. You’ll be able to see the striations in the rock that are from the Paleozoic era. The Grand Canyon is unmatched throughout the world for its wide sequence of archaic rocks that are exposed by the canyon walls.

The best thing to do when planning for one of the Grand Canyon balloon tours is to be prepared. Generally, balloon rides are held at dawn and at dusk, when the winds are at their calmest. Bring a light sweater, or possibly something heavier, as it may be cool at the altitude you’ll be floating. Dressing in layers is best because if the sun is hot that day, you’ll want to be able to discard some clothing.

There are so many ways to see the Grand Canyon:

-On foot by walking or hiking,

-In certain areas in your car or rented SUV or rented Hummer

-Donkey ride down into the canyon

-Helicopter ride

-Rafting Tour

-Boat Tour

-Bus Tour

-Balloon Tour

Grand Canyon balloon tours are by far one of the most awesome, scenic, thrilling ways to experience the wonder of the Grand Canyon. Some might be hesitant to step inside the basket of a hot air balloon and give over the trust to the hot air balloon pilot. This is understandable. How does a hot air balloon work? It’s such a simple idea and the concept is abundant in our every day life. Hot air rises, cool air sinks. The balloon captures the hot air released by the burner, the more the air is heated, the higher the balloon will fly. Crank down the burner, so there is less of a flame, and the balloon will gradually fly lower.

Because the air currents in the atmosphere travel at different speeds, it is possible to be floating at a lesser or greater speed when traveling vertically. To those who might fear the winds, this isn’t a concern at all. The balloon actually floats on the wind, therefore, the balloon glides and the occupants in the basket never feel wind on their face, just an effortless motion along the currents of the air. Grand Canyon balloon tours are just one of the many great opportunities to see one of the wonders of the world up close and personal.
